ICGEB Workshop - Transcription Factors in Cancer Therapy concluded at ICGEB Cape Town

From 8-10 October 2018, the Workshop entitled "Transcription factors in cancer therapy", organised by Luiz. F. Zerbini, ICGEB Cape Town Interim Director and co-organised by Sharon Prince, University of Cape Town, South Africa, was held in Cape Town.

Transcription factors (TFs) govern the expression of genes and are commonly deregulated in cancer. The course focused on both new insights into fundamentals of gene expression control and how these advances impact the understanding of various biological processes and signal transduction during cancer development. The course also covered recent progress toward development of therapeutics targeting transcriptional and chromatin regulators.

Mmboneni  Muofhe, Deputy Director-General, Technology Innovation at the Department of Science and Technology DST, of South Africa, gave an inspiring presentation on the steps being taken to develop the bioeconomy within South Africa. In particular, he highlighted the key elements of human capital obtained through top class, international training combined with cutting-edge research and the critical element of effective communication with politicians, the public and society on the importance of science.

All elements in which the ICGEB excels and can continue to contribute to South Africa attaining these goals.
