Fellowships - Impact

Pre- and postdoctoral fellowship programmes offer high profile, multidisciplinary training and cover a range of topics in genetic engineering and biotechnology. Since 1989, a total of 743 Fellowships at post and pre-doctoral levels have been awarded to fellows originating from over 50 ICGEB Member States and Signatory Countries (Figures 1-3).
The Pre-doctoral fellowship programme provides graduate students with all the necessary means to understand a scientific investigation in the field of life sciences, develop independent thought and critical view, personal responsibility and decision making skills. To date, 155 students have completed their PhD studies at ICGEB and moved on to prestigious institutions at home or abroad as postdoctoral fellows or staff members. Most of these completed their degree with first author publications in high impact international peer review journals, which is in itself the best indication of the quality of the PhD Programme.
The degree can be awarded by a number of validating entities of national and international standing, such as the Open University, UK, the "Scuola Normale Superiore", Pisa, Italy, the University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia, the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India and the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
ICGEB Postdoctoral fellows are trained for an average of two years, during which they actively participate in the research projects of the ICGEB Components.
The Flexible Fellowship Programme, established in 2004, allows students wishing to carry out part of their experimental research studies at the ICGEB laboratories in the framework of joint collaboration. A total of 54 short-term fellowships, and 12 Sandwich PhD fellowships, have been awarded to selected scientists, to widen the knowledge of new techniques within the ICGEB constituency.
