The Advanced Training Course on ‘The Role of the Microbiome in Disease’ took place under the auspices of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), and Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (FASBMB), as the fourth course in the Advanced Summer School series in Africa.

A faculty of local and international scientists conducted the one week advanced theoretical training course for young scientists interested in the topic. Lecture topics included: Oral Microbiome in Health and Disease,  Gut Microbiome and its role in Pancreatic Cancer, Microbial urease in health and disease, Influence of the Microbiome on the Bone Metabolism, Oral Microbiome and Osteonecrosis of Jaws,  Gut Microbiome, Diabetes, and Bone regeneration, The Genital microbiome, HIV and STIs, Microbial community ecology and metrics, The Microbiome and sustainable healthcare, The breastmilk microbiome, The Human Microbiome Research in Africa and Microbiome Dynamics and the risk of Oesophageal Cancer.

The course attracted participants from all over the world including Brazil, Gabon, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, USA and Zimbabwe.
