The ICGEB aims at strengthening the research capability of its Members through a comprehensive training programme and approach to promoting biotechnology internationally. The active participation of ICGEB Member States nationals in the ICGEB Meetings and Courses is therefore highly encouraged.

For more information on the terms of participation and funding opportunities for this event please access the meeting website or contact the local organisers directly

  • The course aims to empower breeders with the various biotechnological and bioinformatics tools available, which range from the marker technologies to the hands-on experience in the use of computer software for developing markers of interest to QTL detection in populations.
  • A participatory approach in the course will help to foster linkages and opportunities for networking among the participants, which may lead to collaborative projects.
  • Bridge the gap in the access to exhisting and new biotechnological tools in Sub Saharan Africa through awarness and education (ARC Biotechnology Platform, Next Generation Sequencing and High Throughput Genotyping)

  • Breeding and classical plant breeding systems

  • Fundamental molecular biology techniques and marker assisted breeding

  • Principles of linkage mapping

  • Marker trait associations analyses for qualitative and quantitative traits

  • Hands-on experience with linkage mapping software

  • DNA sequencing, molecular marker discovery and genomics guided breeding

  • Use of IBP for phenotyping

  • Hands experience with IBP software

  • Principles of QTL mapping

  • Hands-on experience with QTL mapping software

  • What DNA markers can do for plant breeders – examples of marker assisted breeding applications

  • New tools for molecular breeding

  • QTLs from publications to applications

  • No fee is charged to attend this course. Participants are expected to cover their own travel and living costs.

  • A limited number of grants, covering accommodation (twin share) and local hospitality for the duration of the course, are available to a selected number of nationals of ICGEB Member States.
The available grants will be allocated in order of priority, according to the ranking achieved in the selection process.
