Trieste: Next - in the European City of Science

This year's edition of Trieste Next, Science and the Sea, includes a Talk Show, hosted by Mauro Giacca, ICGEB Director-General, at the "Ridotto del Verdi” Theatre, at 11:30 am, on Saturday 23 September 2017. The event entitled: “New molecules for life from the sea", features Vittorio Venturi and special guests Laura Steindler, University of Haifa, Israel, Michael Magri, TereGroup Modena, and Giovanna Romano, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples.
In addition, the ICGEB Outreach team, headed by Paola Massimi, Research Scientist, Tumour Virology Lab, will be hosting Science Labs in Piazza Unità throughout the Event, for school groups and visitors, from Thursday 21 (from 9 am to 7 pm), Friday 22 (from 9 am to 10 pm), and Saturday (from 10 am to 10 pm). One thousand people are expected to attend each day.
The students, scientists, lab personnel and staff lend themselves to enrich our work through engagement, deepening our contribution to the wider society and aligning our mission to our environment.

Laboratory personnel actively participate in scientific fairs and events and strongly support local, national and international outreach activities. These initiatives are made possible through funding obtained for the promotion of free Public Engagement events, such as “Trieste Science & the City”, a talk show organised by ICGEB Trieste, held in a theatre in the town centre and broadcast on national radio and television on themes of scientific interest for the general public. ICGEB participates actively in other initiatives, including Trieste Next, together with the other science institutes located in Trieste, who collectively ensured its selection as the European City of Science for the EuroScience Open Forum ESOF2020.

The ICGEB laboratories in Trieste welcome almost 1000 visitors each year, including school and university groups. Since 2002, lessons in Molecular Medicine have been given in high schools in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Italy, by PhD students from ICGEB Trieste, under a locally funded project. In Trieste, a teaching lab is equipped to accommodate school visits and to facilitate the flow of visitors to the Centre.
