South African delegation in Italy, visits ICGEB Trieste
Ms. Titi Nxumalo, Consul-General of the Republic of South Africa in Milan, together with Ms. Makwatse Mokgethi, Consul-Political of the Republic of South Africa in Milan and other members of the SA delegation, visited the ICGEB Trieste last week.
Seizing the opportunity to tour the premises, they met with Maria Luisa Fichera, ICGEB Chief, Legal & Administration and Lawrence Banks, Scientific Coordinator at ICGEB Trieste and visited, in particular the Neurobiology lab where mechanisms of neurodegeneration, using Drosophila as a model for human genetic diseases, are studied.
The visit was an opportunity to also recall the recent visit by Min. Naledi Pandor, Minister for Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa, to the ICGEB New Delhi Component, and her opening of the Board of Governors session in Cape Town in May 2016. Ms. Nxumalo met briefly with the African PhD students and Postdocs currently in Trieste (from Burundi, Egypt and Tanzania), working, respectively, in the Bacteriology, Protein Networks and Molecular Virology labs.
