India-Australia Collaborative Workshop on Biofuels and RNAi
The Workshop aimed to strengthen research collaboration and initiatives to establish a joint team of Australian and Indian research and industry partners to pursue high-potential research topics of common interest in the agricultural sector. Prof. V.S. Chauhan, Director, ICGEB New Delhi opened the meeting. The Hon. Mr. Bernard Philip, Acting High Commissioner, Australian High Commission, also addressed the participants on the scope of the scientific alliance between Australia and India.
Dr. Renu Swarup, Indian Department of Biotechnology, and Prof. Robert Henry, Director of the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, QAAFI, presented talks on food and energy security. The keystone address was delivered by Prof S.K. Sopory, Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
The meeting was well attended by many distinguished professors, academicians and leading experts from India and Australia and many guests from the DBT. Two sessions focused on Sorghum as a feedstock for Biofuels and RNAi technologies for improved agriculture.
Key talks in biofuels were also given by P. Srinivasa Rao, ICRISAT, David Jordan, QAAFI, K. Gurumurthy, Former Director, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, IFGTB, Coimbatore, A.V. Umakanth, Directorate of Sorghum Research and by Banibrata Pandey, Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd.
The speakers in the RNAi session included Neena Mitter, QAAFI, Sunil Mukherjee, University of Delhi South Campus, Neeti Sanan Mishra, the Workshop organizer and Staff Research Scientist, Plant Molecular Biology lab, ICGEB New Delhi, Vilas Parkhi, Advanta and Supriyo Chakrobarty, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
