ICGEB Cape Town celebrates 10th Anniversary

Cape Town, South Africa, became the third country in the world to host a laboratory of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB). South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki officially opened the third ICGEB Component on the premises of the Institute for Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM) at the University of Cape Town on 10 September 2007.

Next week, from 18 to 21 September, the Workshop entitled "Host-directed therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases", organised by Frank Brombacher, Scientific Coordinator and Group Leader, Cytokines and Diseases, ICGEB Cape Town, will be held, marking the 10th Anniversary of ICGEB in South Africa.

Some of the highlights of the last ten years of activity have included workshops on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research and on Prevention of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases. In 2016, the 22nd Session of the ICGEB Board of Governors was hosted in Cape Town; a spectacular event opened by the Honorable Minister Naledi Pandor, with prominent members of the BRICS countries in attendance.

Over the years, ICGEB Cape Town has both visited other African countries and institutes,including Kenya and has hosted high-level delegations from other African nations, including Angola, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. It has been present at prominent meetings, such as the International Conference on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (ICTERM), co-hosted by the University of California.

Research highlights have included Repurposing drugs for anti-cancer therapeuticsWomen in Science Awards, and has received significant funding, for ICGEB South Africa, most recently from the European Commission: ICGEB Partners EU STARBIOS2 Project,

ICGEB Cape Town previously celebrated and reported its activity in Biotechnology for Africa, a publication presented to the Council of Scientific Advisers in 2014 (see below), of which there was also an earlier edition published in 2011.

The achievements, milestones and future directions of ICGEB on the Cape will be presented and published in a forthcoming paper.
