Education and Training

Teaching and contributing to a vibrant research community are concepts integral to the activities held across the three ICGEB Components. Every year, the ICGEB organizes over 20 meetings, workshops and courses in its Components and Member States world wide, covering subjects at the forefront of biomedical research and biotechnology.
In the interests of perpetuating free, and broad, distribution of scientific resources, and extending outreach, podcasts of seminar presentations, courses and lessons held in Trieste are available from the Web site. Since July 2011, these are also available on iTunes U - Beyond Campus, where they have been previewed and downloaded by over 15,000 users in only four months.

Meetings and Courses

The organisation of yearly practical and theoretical courses, ranging from one to two weeks’ duration at the Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town Components, and in Member States, continues to be a successful source of training for scientists worldwide. The contribution of internationally recognised scientists, and the variety of aspects regularly covered (from genome mapping techniques to the proliferation of normal and cancer cells, the risks and benefits of transgenic organisms, and biocomputing), continue to constitute a major asset for the ICGEB annual meetings and courses programme, the popularity of which is shown by the number of requests for participation received.

The Arturo Falaschi ICGEB Fellowships

Long and short-term fellowships are available to assist in the training of scientists from Member States through the following actions:

International PhD Programme
ICGEB offers postgraduate studies with the aim of obtaining the "Doctor Philosophiae" (PhD) degree in molecular genetics and life sciences. The degree can be awarded by a number of validating entities of national and international level such as the Open University (UK); the University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia), the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (India) and the University of Cape Town (South Africa).

Postdoctoral Fellowships
Scientists may apply for a postdoctoral fellowship to be carried out at one of the Components. Successful candidates may be eligible for follow-up funding for their research upon their return to the home institute through the Return Grant Programme.

Flexible Fellowships
Short-term fellowships to be awarded for ongoing collaborative research between scientists from ICGEB Member States and the research groups at the ICGEB Laboratories in Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town. The "Sandwich" PhD Programme is open to PhD registered students wishing to carry out part of their experimental studies at the ICGEB Laboratories in the framework of an agreed collaboration.
