The very rich diversity of biota as well as the wealth of indigenous knowledge systems in the developing world, combined with modern technologies,  can lead to the development of valuable new medicines, vaccines and neutraceuticals.

The biggest obstacle to product development in the developing countries is the huge 'R&D chasm' that exists between discovery and technology transfer. To bridge this gap, the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) has planned a Series of Scientific Meetings on Drug Discovery & Development Research in Developing Countries (DRDC), to bring together practising researchers in the field from academia, industry and government on a regular basis, with the aim of helping to advance scientific knowledge in the field of drug discovery and development research in the developing world. Bangladesh, in recent years, has made remarkable progress in the health and pharmaceutical sectors, and these scientific meetings will provide additional opportunity to the participants to get some insight on these development for the benefit of other countries.
The 1st International Symposium in the series, “Building R&D Capacity in S&T-lagging Countries for Discovery and Development of new Drugs from the Regional Biota”, is sponsored by the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Trieste, Italy) and Incepta Pharmaceuticals Limited (Bangladesh) under the Incepta-ICGEB partnership in action. Through this Symposium, the organisers hope to bring together scientific experts and potential industry partners to assess the availability of the required expertise and facilities in developing countries, to initiate multidisciplinary collaboration between research groups with complementary strengths, and to induce need-based capacity development in S&T·lagging countries. The objective would be the setting up of regional drug discovery and development research networks, that working together with local industries, could help in the establishment of research-led biopharmaceutical sectors focused on the health care needs and economic growth of the developing world.
The programme will also include a Panel Discussion on Capacity Development.
